Treurige Kaarsen

Sorrowful Candles

Treurige Kaarsen/Sorrowful Candles is a poster made out of fifteen images taken by me. Each image represents the location where an act of pointless violence took place. Paul Pluijmert is depicted in the middle as he was a victim of violence without any reason. He was stabbed and passed away on the street.

I want to increase the social awareness of stabbing incidents that have recently taken place in Breda and want to ensure that people are shocked. Next to that, I want them to realize what happened and to stand still for the victims.

All photos were taken in the dark because I associate darkness with violence. Moreover, the incidents often happened at night. The candles depict the victim and the perpetrator as their lives are both destroyed in other ways. However the perpetrator had a choice, the victim did not.

I depicted all fifteen images in one image in order to get through to people and in order to increase the shock-factor.

When I took the pictures on these fifteen locations – normal streets where, during the day, many people pass – it made me emotional. I became very aware of the pointlessness of what happened at these locations.
